Scope of application

These instructions apply to the installation of sealing membranes manufactured from plasticised PVC, type BE and BI, for use as damp-proofing for flooring in rooms without a foundation, for bathrooms and balconies and terraces in accordance with DIN 18195.

General information

BE and BI sealing membranes are waterproof and characterised by high flexibility. The sealing membranes provides a reliable seal and prevents rising damp The non-rotting membranes are resistant against naturally occurring chemicals and very durable. BI sealing membranes also are bitumen and oil compatible.

Installation

Prior to installing BE / BI sealing membranes, it is necessary to loosely cover any rough surfaces with a protection layer such as a chemical non-woven fleece. The sealing membranes are then rolled out on this fleece underlay. The membrane webs need to overlap each other by at least 5 cm. The sealing membranes are joined by hot or cold welding or application of PVC adhesive. In rooms without basement underneath the sealing membranes are installed up to a point above screed level. On balconies and terraces the membranes need to be extended up the walls to a point at least 10 cm above floor level and fastened with contact adhesive or covered with a zinc or aluminium flashing. A more advantageous solution is to establish connections by means of PVC coated metal profiles VB 120 (accessories). For connections of waterproofing membranes to brickwork the BE sealing membranes need to be joined to the waterproofing membranes by welding or by application of adhesive. Connections to openings shall be established by means of waterproof contact adhesive or flange connections. Screed is either placed directly on the sealing membrane or on an intermediate insulation layer. BE sealing membranes are incompatible with polystyrene hard foam, therefore, they need to be separated from the hard foam layer by installing separation layers (accessory range).
