- Retaining reservoirs
People everywhere in the world need water and in many regions water is scarce. Water is the world's most valuable resource and must be protected from pollution and loss. Building water basins for various application types is very important. The bottom and embankment of such basins need to be waterproof to avoid loss of the urgently needed water. Water needs to be transferred without loss over long distances to provide arid regions with the life-sustaining water. It is used as potable water but also for industrial purposes or irrigation. In the past, most channels, dams and reservoirs were built of concrete, which entailed the risk of damage and resulting water losses. Particularly in concrete structures, water losses result from cracks and other defects. ELBE Natural Surface sealing membranes are the right choice for optimum waterproofing.
Installation
Reservoir bottoms that are lined with sealing membranes approved for hydraulic structures are a safe and highly resistant means of waterproofing. After completion of all required excavation work the ground must be thoroughly compacted and be free from sharp-edged objects such as rocks. These have to be removed from the reservoirs bottom. Depending on the type of construction, the reservoir bottom is either covered with a layer of sand or a fleece material in order to protect the sealing membrane from damage. The sealing membrane is rolled out on the bottom.
For excavation work please take into account that a narrow trench along the edges of the excavation is required for fastening the sealing membranes in the ground. Depending on the type of construction, the edges may either be weighted down with soil or rocks/gravel.
The sealing membrane should be loosely rolled out on the bottom making sure no membrane part is subjected to tension and joints are connected by hot-air welding or hot-wedge welding. The joint should be at least 5 cm in width. For details please refer to the Installation Instructions. Make sure to observe the instructions on preliminary works before commencing hot-wedge welding. Factors such as moisture, temperature etc. have to be taken into account.
